Guide Books

Mountain Bike! Southwest Washington A Guide to Trails & Adventure
by John Zilly

"For an exceptional fat-tire roundup of the Evergreen State, follow the highly informative tread of John Zilly. The author of Kissing the Trail: Greater Seattle Mountain Bike Adventures widens his scope with two volumes detailing some of the best trails in Western Washington. Mountain Bike! Southwest Washington, and its companion, Mountain Bike! Northwest Washington are the definitions of good guidebooks: they boast serious research, sensible organization, and a battery of useful trail maps and directions. What's more, Zilly possesses a flair for the written word not often found in such practical guides; he steers the hungry cyclist through a variety of trail conditions and skill levels in style, highlighting particularly gnarly terrain and displaying an infectious enthusiasm for the thrill of a squirrelly widowmaker descent. Serious knobby-heads will also thank Zilly (and, later on the trail, curse him) for the inclusion of 30-mile "epics," all-day single-track journeys that combine awesome views, technical riding, and all-out endurance tests. Every mountain-biking hotspot should be so lucky to have a Zilly as tour guide." - Amazon.com Editorial Reviews

IMBA Epics varying states and dates.

The type of mountain bike adventures that inspire IMBA's staff, members and affiliated clubs to keep working hard to bring out the best in our sport. These are the rides that fuel great stories that will be told and retold for years. They're long, they're tough, but they can be completed and savored even by average riders with a strong will and sense of adventure.

As always, the 2001 IMBA Epic Rides are geographically diverse. We picked trails in California (?) and Oregon (July 28-29) on the West Coast, Nevada (September 26-27) and Colorado (November 3-4) in the mountain states, North Dakota (August 25-26) and Missouri (?) in the Midwest, and Massachusetts (September 8-9) and North Carolina (October 20-21) in the East. This mix of locations is a reminder that great mountain bike rides can be found almost everywhere.

Once again IMBA is honoring each Epic pick with a two-day Epic celebration. The first day features a trailwork session and the second day is highlighted by a big ride. Stayed tuned to IMBA's home page in the coming months to learn how you can participate.
