Choosing a Gym
by Jessie, co-author & illustrator of weight
lifting program for absolute beginners
Here is a method for finding a gym you will want to go to:
- Spend half an hour figuring out your schedule - what time of day you
will be able to work out at, consistently.
- Find several gyms within a reasonable distance from your home or work.
- Write out a list of requirements * and put on your workout outfit
and head out.
Requirements:
A gym should be comfortable. Comfort is different
for different people, but here are some things to keep in mind:
A gym should be properly equipped.
-
Most gyms now will have similar types of weight
lifting machines, but the quality will vary. Try a couple out.
-
The amount of free weights that the gym keeps
will vary quite a bit. Make sure you're not waiting around too
much.
-
There should be some instructors around who are
willing to give you advice and who are good at it.
A gym should be easy to use
-
stay within your budget - resentment of a gym
fee will hurt your motivation.
-
Don't sign up for anything that sounds funny or
expensive. If you're going to sign up for a coach or for a long
term contract, you need to spend some time in the gym and with
the coach first to know if that's right for you.
-
And of course make sure the gym is convenient
enough that you'll use it.
